Hikari is an independent clothing label based in Vienna, inspired by Japanese visual culture. From traditional Edo woodblock prints to the streets of Tokyo after dark, we bring these influences into contemporary graphic design. Printed on heavyweight 100% cotton using direct-to-garment printing for the best print quality.

Percent cotton. No blend, no plastic feel, ink in the fibre instead of on top of it.

Direct to garment printing. Water-based ink pushed into the cotton, so the graphic bends with the fabric instead of cracking on it.

The name means light

We picked it because light is the thing every one of our collections is actually about. A paper lantern carried down a mountain road. Sodium glare on a wet Tokyo street at three in the morning. The first sun hitting a snow line. Filtered green through a bamboo grove.

Eight worlds to explore. That is the whole brief we give an illustrator.

It is also a promise about the product. Colour that stays where you put it, wash after wash. A graphic that still looks like the day it arrived after a season of actual wearing. Light that does not fade is the most literal thing we could have named ourselves.

How a piece gets made

Four steps

The research

Someone reads properly. Where the motif comes from, what it meant, who drew it first. If we cannot explain it in a paragraph, we do not make it.

The drawing

We work with a small circle of illustrators, not a marketplace. That is why the catalogue looks like one hand rather than a hundred.

The check

We read every character on every design before a single piece is printed. This step is not optional.

The print

Direct to garment, water-based ink pushed into 100% cotton at 230 GSM. Pre-shrunk, so the fit stays. If a sample does not look right, it does not go on the site.
